The Alabama SBIR/STTR (Small Business Innovative Research/Small Business Technology Transfer) Assistance Program, a component of the Alabama Launchpad Startup Competition, has awarded Archangel a Phase 0 award of $5,000 for DoD accounting compliance efforts. 

Greg Sheek, Alabama Launchpad programs director states, “The Phase 0 Accounting Compliance Award to Archangel Systems is significant because it reinforces that Alabama Launchpad is helping Alabama companies access America’s largest seed fund, which is the SBIR program.”

Archangel Systems, Inc. announced today it has received EASA ETSO C4c, C5e, C6e, C88a and C106-A1 approval to manufacture its AHR150A and AHR300A Air Data Attitude Heading Reference Systems (ADAHRS).  With this ETSO, the European aviation market now has its own airworthiness qualification for these ADAHRS in Part 23, 25, 27 and 29 installations.

“This is Archangel’s first TSO outside of the US and we’re pleased that is it on our flagship product,” says Bill Dillard, Archangel’s Director of Emerging Technology.  “Because the ADHARS are exportable worldwide, we get lots of interest from the European community.  The ETSO really supports those customers and their programs.”

These ADAHRS meet all the requirements of ETSO C4c for Pitch and Bank, C5e for an Unslaved Direction Gyro (using all solid state MEMS sensors), and C6e for Gyro Stabilized Magnetic Heading. The systems also meet the requirements of C88a for Altitude Reporting Equipment, using an 11 wire discrete interface compatible with most transponders, as well as C106 A1 for an Air Data computer.

The AHR150A and AHR300A have maximum gyro output rates of 128°/s and 256°/s respectively. Each system is composed of two boxes: an Inertial Sensing Unit and a Magnetic Sensing Unit.  Both ADAHRS include multiple high- and low-speed ARINC ports, allowing them to integrate seamlessly into any modern avionics suite.

Using MEMS sensors and sophisticated blending algorithms, the AHR150A and AHR300A yield "FOG-grade" performance at greatly reduced size, weight, power, and cost.  Several companies, including Airbus Military and Erickson Incorporated, have selected the AHR150A for their type certifications in both rotary- and fixed-wing platforms.

Paradigm Aerospace (PAC) and Archangel Systems, Inc. have signed a dealer agreement that authorizes Paradigm to sell, service, and install Archangel products. The agreement focuses on Archangel’s line of sensing products, including the AHR150A Air Data Attitude Heading Reference System (ADAHRS), AHR75 Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS), and AFC001 Flight Controller.

Based in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, Paradigm Aerospace is a division of Metro Aviation and has been providing helicopter completions, maintenance, avionics upgrades, and other services in the rotary wing community for over 30 years. Paradigm is a certified FAA Repair Station and Bell Helicopter Customer Service Facility.

Rotorcraft Support, Inc. (Van Nuys, CA) and Archangel Systems, Inc. (Auburn, AL) have signed a dealer agreement that authorizes RSI to sell, service, and install Archangel products. Our agreement focuses on Archangel’s sensors: the AHR150A Air Data Attitude Heading Reference System (ADAHRS) and the AHR75 Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS).

Located at the Van Nuys Airport in Southern California, RSI has been in business since 1986 as a full service helicopter maintenance facility offering, upgrades, modifications, completions, helicopter maintenance and repair services as well as component overhaul and structural repair.  RSI is a Certified Customer Service Facility for leading helicopter manufacturers, including Bell, Airbus Helicopter, MD Helicopters, Agusta Westland, Enstrom and Robinson.

Both products carry all requisite TSO approvals for Part 23, 25, 27 and 29 aircraft, DO-178B Level A software and DO-160E certification to stringent category levels.  The AHR150A has internal dissimilar hardware, making it particularly attractive to IFR applications.

Each Erickson Air-Crane S-64 helicopter uses a dual shipset of Archangel’s AHR150A ADAHRS and the AFC001 Automatic Flight Controller. The AHR150A provides air data, attitude, and magnetic heading on digital ports to primary and multi-functional displays, while the AFC001 translates the digital data to analog for the autopilot.

Marenco Swisshelicopters, an Archangel Systems customer, completed the first flight of their revolutionary SKYe SH09 helicopter on October 2nd.  A brand new design with composite body, the SH09 uses Archangel’s AHR75 AHRS for attitude and heading data. The air data computer is from our friends at Aerosonic.

The prototype helicopter spent a total of approximately 5 minutes hovering 2 meters high at Marenco’s Mollis airport site. While the time spent airborne was limited, the tests did provide vital data on the helicopter’s reaction to in-flight structural stresses.  Subsequent test flights are scheduled to take place once the data have been analyzed.

Marenco will use build two additional SH09 prototypes, using all three in their EASA certification efforts. Certification is slated for 2016.  Marenco currently has over 50 units on back-order and predicts that production will eventually reach 80 per year.

Archangel Systems, Inc. announced today that it has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract to develop a Triaxial Accelerometer with Low Offset and Noise (TALON). This is response to a three-layered problem being experienced by the Department of Defense. First, missile propulsion and control systems now outpace the accuracy of available guidance systems. Second, smaller munitions need accelerometer and gyroscopes that offer true navigation-grade performance at tactical-grade pricing. Finally, proven and reliable supply chains and product support infrastructures must be used in order to field new technologies quickly.

As always, the problem reveals the opportunity – a low-cost, mass producible IMU with navigation-grade performance metrics could not only solve the munitions guidance issue, but it could also service the large DoD user community needing tens of thousands of units annually.

Archangel Systems, Inc. (ASI) proposes an approach coined TALON (Triaxial Accelerometer with Low Offset and Noise). TALON is a variant of ASI’s patented NGMARS concept funded through DoD SBIRS and DARPA’s NGIMG (Navigation Grade Integrated Micro Gyroscope) project. In NGMARS, a silicon rotor is force balanced electrodynamically to a null position (x, y and z) and attitude (tilt) within a cavity. Once balanced, the rotor is spun at high speed allowing roll and pitch sensing via precession forces. In this sense, NGMARS is akin to a spinning mass gyro with electrodynamic gimbals. To achieve the three axis accelerometer in TALON, the device does not need to be spun thus reducing the complexity of the electronics and algorithms.
